farewell,the legend of pop

He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves, his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters.

Jackson was set to launch a 50-show comeback concert in London, which was tagged to be the highest-grossing concert engagement yet, with over $85 million worth of tickets already sold.

"It's like when Kennedy was assassinated. I will always remember being in Times Square when Michael Jackson died."

From the stars :

Disney Channel's "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus sent "love and blessings" to Jackson and his fans, saying the "King of Pop" was her inspiration. Rap artist Ludacris said, "If it were not for Micheal (sic) Jackson I would not be where or who I am today. His Music and Legacy will live on Forever."

Music mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, meanwhile, had this to say of his idol: "Michael Jackson showed me that you can actually see the beat. He made the music come to life!! He made me believe in magic. I will miss him!".

Even Grammy-nominated British singer and instrumentalist Imogen Heap could not contain her extreme disappointment at Jackson's early death. "Nooooo!!!! Michael Jackson was my childhood! I loved him. So so so so sad. So nearly saw him live. Just a couple of weeks. crying. (sic)," she said.

American soul singer Erykah Badu, the latest to issue a statement on Twitter, thanked Jackson for his "hard work, dedication, philanthropy, and sacrifice of [his] young spirit." She added, "Your vision and imagination live..."

Non-musicians also attested to Jackson's impact on their lives. Socialite Kim Kardashian said "music will never be the same" while actress Alyssa Milano gushed: "Remember the first time you saw him moonwalk? RIP Michael Jackson."

Celebrities (and some politicians) also sent condolences to Jackson's family, friends, and fans - including California Governor Arnold Swarzenegger, Lance Armstrong, Ashton Kutcher and his wife Demi Moore.

Kutcher and Moore were concerned about Jackson's children and appealed to the public to respect the children's rights to anonymity and privacy.

Jackson has two children with nurse Deborah Rowe, named Michael Joseph Jackson and Paris Michael Katherine. He also has a third child, Prince Michael II (nicknamed "Blanket") with an unidentified woman.

A stark contrast to the glum messages predominating Twitter, Comedian Dane Cook quipped: "I'm dedicating my [comedy] show tonight to Michael Jackson. THRILLER got me laid. Well... At least thats what I told my friends."

Fellow comedians Ellen Degeneres and Sarah Silverman, however, remained somber. "So sad to hear about Michael Jackson. His music changed our lives. The world has lost an amazing singer and dancer. I will miss him," Degeneres said.

Silverman, meanwhile, said this: "MJ was the best pop songwriter of all time,&was (sic) maybe even an innocent man whose only crime was loving children. Hm this wasn't funny at all."

Britney Spears : "I was so excited to see his show in London. We were going to be on tour in Europe at the same time. He has been an inspiration throughout my entire life and I'm devastated he's gone!"

Justin Timberlake took to his Web site saying, "I can't find the words right now to express how deeply saddened I am by Michael's passing. We have lost a genius and a true ambassador of not only Pop music but of all music."

Hundreds of celebs had gathered at his home in Old Windsor, Berkshire, for the annual bash when news emerged of the star's death.

"Let us remember him for his unparalleled contribution to the world of music, his generosity of spirit in his quest to heal the world & the joy he brought to his millions of devoted fans throughout the world. I feel blessed to have performed with him several times & to call him my friend.

"No artist will ever take his place. His star will shine forever."

US reality star Kim Kardashian had known Jacko her entire life. She wrote: "I'm looking at pictures of my 14th bday party at Neverland Ranch, these memories will last forever!"

Chris Moyles said: "Michael Jackson was to me what I imagine Elvis was to another generation. I bought his songs and I saw him live. His death is very sad."

X Factor winner Alexandra Burke wrote: "May MJ Rest in peace. Sometimes God need's to call his angels home. May His music live on..."

Actress Demi Moore wrote on her Twitter site: "I am greatly saddened for the loss of both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. Especially for their children!"

Husband Ashton Kutcher reacted like most fans, initially stunned, baffled and looking for confirmation of the early news reports that were coming out.

"Michael Jackson had a heart attack?" he asked on his Twitter page, before updating: "Mike Jackson passed away today from a heart attack. That's what tmz said. Wow"

He later wrote: "Pray for his kids."
